This comes as the Australian government plans to introduce legislation requiring social media platforms to provide users with a choice between algorithm-recommended content and a chronological feed of the pages they follow. Adam Mosseri noted that while a vocal minority of users may prefer chronological feeds, the average user experience suffers because brands and companies can post more frequently than individuals. He observed that engagement and user satisfaction often fall significantly when the algorithm is disabled. He also acknowledged that the ranking algorithm can feel like a "black box" but stated that the company is working to provide users with more control and transparency.\n The proposed legislation is part of a broader Digital Duty of Care framework. The administration announced that platforms will be required to send notifications to users to offer this choice. If tech firms fail to comply, they could face penalties of up to 109.2 million Australian dollars. The administration also plans to protect children from content promoting eating disorders, crime, and mental health distress.
