Bastiaan Jongerius Architecten designed Longhouse Farm, a new home built around an existing 1970s farmhouse in the Netherlands.
Bastiaan Jongerius Architecten transformed a modest 1970s farmhouse in Zunderdorp, The Netherlands, by building a new structure around the original cottage rather than demolishing it. The project, known as Longhouse Farm, preserves the original timber roof structure while updating the home to energy-neutral, bio-based standards. Architects utilized blackened accoya wood and black standing-seam metal panels to create a long, low farmhouse profile inspired by regional building types and Alpine barns. The design features long sightlines that connect the interior to the surrounding polder landscape, including the open meadows and ditches. Concrete benches at the base of the facade serve as an extension of the living space, allowing residents to catch the sun at different times of day. By choosing to work within the existing constraints of the old house, the studio created a character-rich home that honors its past while providing a modern living space.
