Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation to address the mounting challenges facing navigation through the strategic Hormuz Strait. The two diplomats sought to establish practical understandings to ensure the free and uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic, which currently remains significantly below prewar levels. According to the Oman News Agency, the leaders discussed ways to create conditions for resuming dialogue to narrow differences and reach peaceful solutions. This follows as recent understanding between Tehran and Muscat regarding the geographic coordinates of a proposed maritime corridor for commercial vessels. Maritime traffic in the region has faced frequent attacks and security risks, with the UKMTO reporting that traffic stood at approximately 90% below prewar levels. The discussion comes as as a result of the conflict that began in late February with a user-Israeli attack on Iran, leading to a series of retaliatory strikes by Tehran across the region.
