The UAE halts all trade and financial transactions with Iran to intensify economic pressure on the regime.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced that it would halt all trade and financial transactions with Iran to discourage Iranian efforts to control or disrupt navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This move follows accusations from the UAE that Iran launched missiles toward Emirati territory on August 18. By severing these ties, the UAE aims to weaken Iran's deteriorating economy, particularly as roughly one-third of Iranian imports come from the UAE. The decision also serves to increase pressure on Iran-Oman negotiations regarding the management of the strait. Simultaneously, the US Treasury Department is implementing a coordinated economic isolation campaign to deepen Iran's economic isolation. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Operation Economic Outcast, which aims to block every potential source of revenue for the Iranian regime. This campaign includes sanctioning 60 entities, individuals, and vessels to limit Iran's ability to procure nuclear and missile technology. The administration announced that the US will unilaterally act if governments fail to meet specified timelines to shut down problematic activities with Iran.
