King Abdullah II maintains Jordan's strategic alliance with the United States despite frequent Iranian missile strikes

Jordan continues to maintain a strong security partnership with the United States, despite facing frequent Iranian missile and drone attacks. The administration announced a defense-cooperation agreement in 2021 that granted U.S. forces access to 12 military installations across the kingdom. These installations, including the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, serve as key logistics hubs for U.S. transport planes and combat aircraft. King Abdullah II has managed the kingdom's position as a target of Iranian strikes, which have occurred since February. While the administration's forces have been involved in the conflict, Jordan has largely refrained from launching retaliatory strikes against Iran. This restraint is attributed to Jordan's large Palestinian population and the king's desire to avoid being seen as protecting Israel. Recent reports indicate that Iran has used the Kheibar Shekan, a medium-range ballistic missile, to target U.S. assets in Jordan. However, a senior U.S. official stated that Washington had no information indicating missiles were launched toward U.S. bases in Jordan following an Israeli report. Conversely, the Jordanian army reported that 13 Iranian ballistic missiles entered the kingdom's airspace on September 2, with 10 of these being intercepted.
