Federal prosecutors decline to indict ICE agent Christian Castro for shooting illegal immigrant Julio Sosa-Celis

Federal prosecutors in Minneapolis have decided not to present the case of ICE agent Christian Castro to a grand jury for a deprivation of rights under color of law charge. The decision follows a shooting during the administration's wintertime immigration operation where Christian Castro shot illegal immigrant Julio Sosa-Celis in the leg on January 14. While the federal government opted not to indict, Christian Castro remains facing state-level assault charges in Minnesota. However, a jurisdictional dispute has delayed the proceedings. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison requested the extradition of Christian Castro from Texas, but Republican Governor Greg Abbott has not yet signed the security warrant. A federal judge ruled that because Abbott has not officially denied the request, the court cannot force him to act. The Department of Homeland Security announced that Christian Castro is currently suspended from ICE without pay while the Minnesota U.S. attorney’s office continues to investigate whether he lied under oath.
