Freddie Watson, a project manager for the Blue Marine Foundation, has presented a proposal to protect approximately 30% of the waters surrounding the island of Sark. The plan, developed in collaboration with local fishermen and marine experts, aims to safeguard sensitive habitats and support sustainable fishing practices. By identifying important habitats, including previously unmapped seagrass, the proposal ensures that protection is focused where it is most needed. These waters are home to several species, including the European spiny lobster and octopus. Watson noted that stronger marine protection will benefit both wildlife and humans by sustaining fish stocks and preserving biodiversity. Furthermore, he highlighted that these habitats are essential for drawing down and locking away carbon. The proposal will now be submitted to the governing body Chief Pleas for final approval.
