Joseph Aoun Criticizes Israeli Escalation in Southern Lebanon Following Recent Airstrikes
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has condemned the ongoing Israeli military escalation in southern Lebanon, specifically targeting the Nabatieh district. The attacks, which occurred despite a June 26 framework agreement brokered by the administration, have resulted in significant civilian casualties. On Saturday, Israeli air raids killed at least 11 people, including several children, and destroyed numerous buildings in the southern region. President Joseph Aoun stated that these strikes violate the ceasefire and international laws protecting civilians. While the administration announced the framework agreement, which ties Israeli withdrawal to the disarmament of Hezbollah, the militant group has refused to disarm until a full withdrawal is achieved. The Israeli military claims these strikes are a response to Hezbollah actions, though critics argue the policy is a campaign of collective punishment against the Lebanese population. Since March 2, more than 4,000 people have been allegedly killed by Israeli forces in Lebanon, with approximately 600,000 people remaining displaced.
