Shinya Yamanaka Defends Integrity Against Claims of Image Manipulation in Multiple Scientific Studies
The Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) at Kyoto University has defended Nobel Prize winner Shinya Yamanaka against allegations of image manipulation in several research papers. The institute stated that questioning Shinya Yamanaka's integrity without sufficient evidence is "completely unacceptable," following a report by Gotham City Research LLC. Gotham City Research LLC alleged image duplication in 10 papers where Shinya Yamanaka was an author between 2000 and 2020. However, CiRA officials noted that many of these cases have already been addressed. For instance, one paper was corrected in 2008, while another was investigated in 2014 and found to have no concrete evidence of duplication. In several other studies, Shinya Yamanaka was merely a co-author who provided research materials rather than leading the study. Furthermore, the institute clarified that some retractions were the result of misconduct by colleagues rather than Shinya Yamanaka himself. CiRA officials believe the report draws unfounded conclusions by treating different cases collectively as a pattern of research misconduct.
