Australian Minister for Defence Richard Marles and Japanese Minister for Defence Shinjiro Koizumi met in Canberra to deepen military cooperation between their two nations. The two ministers confirmed that Japan will utilize Australian missile ranges over the next decade to conduct tests of hypersonic missiles and other projectiles. This arrangement provides strategic depth for Japan as it monitors a rising China and responds to US demands for regional allies to increase military spending. The meeting also highlighted the success of field trials for Project Boobook, a co-developed high-energy laser system designed to detect threats on both land and naval platforms. The project represents a significant industrial partnership, with Mitsubishi Electric Australia investing 70 million Australian dollars to establish new manufacturing facilities in Sydney. Additionally, the two nations are progressing discussions on Australia's acquisition of three Mogami-class frigates from Japan, a deal valued at A$10 billion over ten years.
