Joshua Wong Pleads Guilty to Foreign Collusion Charge in Hong Kong National Security Case

Joshua Wong, a prominent pro-democracy activist, pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces in Hong Kong. The 29-year-old activist is accused of urging foreign powers to impose sanctions, blockades, or other hostile measures against China and Hong Kong. Prosecutors stated that Wong worked with exiled activist Nathan Law to lobby foreign politicians, including former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and current Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He also used media outlets and social media to call for international action after the implementation of the national security law in 2020. Wong is currently serving a nearly five-year sentence for subversion and was scheduled for release in early 2027. This new charge carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if the offense is deemed of a grave nature. Defense lawyers suggested a sentence of four and a half years for this latest case, while the prosecution noted that Wong had previously claimed to have renounced his calls for foreign sanctions during a failed 2020 election bid.
