Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma named next monarch of Tooro Kingdom amid bitter succession dispute

The royal clan’s succession committee for the Tooro Kingdom announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next monarch. Kijanangoma, a news anchor and editor for the state broadcaster, is the cousin of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The committee selected Kijanangoma after a search that included Prince George Desmond-Kamurasi, who declined the throne due to other responsibilities. This announcement was immediately rejected by the late king's close family. Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, the king's sister, stated that the king's 2022 will clearly named his son as the heir. While the committee argued that the child had not been formally introduced to the elders as required by tradition, the family maintains that the son should succeed him. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Akiiki also expressed disappointment with the committee's choice, noting that the royal family has been placed under house arrest by deployed troops. Culture Minister Henry Tumukunde has stepped in to oversee mediation efforts. The late king, who was crowned at age three and was the world's youngest reigning monarch, will be buried on Saturday in Fort Portal.
