Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court on Friday to two stalking charges related to the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Following this plea, Mangione's attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the state charges against him in New York, citing the principle of double jeopardy. The defense argues that because the federal government and the state of New York are acting as single sovereigns to maximize punishment, the state should not prosecute him twice for the same crime. Judge Gregory Carro has adjourned the state trial, which was originally scheduled to begin on September 8, and gave the Manhattan District Attorney's Office until October 9 to respond to the motion. The next state court date is set for December 10. Meanwhile, Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on December 18, where he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office stated it remains committed to seeking justice for the family of Brian Thompson.
