This decision follows the South Carolina Supreme Court's decision to overturn Alex Murdaugh's 2023 murder convictions for the deaths of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul Murdaugh. The court cited improper jury influence by the court clerk as the reason for the retrial. Alex Murdaugh remains in prison while serving a 40-year federal sentence and a 27-year state sentence for financial crimes. He admitted to stealing from his clients and remains in prison for these crimes while the murder retrial is scheduled for April 2027.
