Judge to Rule on Trial and Death Penalty for Tyler Robinson in Charlie Kirk Assassination Case

Judge Tony Graf Jr. is expected to rule on whether Tyler Robinson will stand trial for the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The preliminary hearing took place in Provo, Utah, where prosecutors presented evidence to establish probable cause for the aggravated murder charge, which carries the death penalty. Prosecutors argued that Robinson created a great risk of death to the thousands of people surrounding Kirk when he fired his high-powered rifle. They cited the 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump as precedent for the risk of death in a public setting. Defense attorneys argued that the shooting was not a capital offense because Robinson hit his intended target and did not put other lives at risk. During the hearing, the defense attorney Richard Novak claimed that Charlie Kirk was full of hate, a statement that was met with rebukes from the prosecution and Kirk's family. Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, attended the hearing and expressed that she had forgiven the man accused of killing her husband. The administration announced plans to posthumously award Kirk a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
