Judge Michael Chitty to Rule on Karmelo Anthony's Request for a New Murder Trial

Judge Michael Chitty is set to rule on whether Karmelo Anthony will receive a new trial for the murder of Austin Metcalf. The 19-year-old Anthony was convicted of stabbing Metcalf during a track meet and sentenced to 35 years in prison. The defense argues that the original trial was unconventional due to a private agreement to keep the violent backgrounds of both individuals out of public view. This agreement prevented Anthony from taking the test stand, as he feared prosecutors would introduce damaging character evidence, such as his history of stalking and aggressive text messages. Conversely, prosecutors argued that the restrictions were necessary to manage intense public pressure and threats. During the hearings, new evidence was revealed, including Austin Metcalf's history of using racial slurs and Karmelo Anthony's obsession with firearms and his tendency to 'black out' when angry. The court also removed Judge John Roach from the case due to concerns over his impartiality. Judge Michael Chitty must render a decision by Monday.
