The Department of Justice sues Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools over policies regarding transgender students and parental rights

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools to address policies that allow students to socially transition to different genders at school while potentially withholding that information from parents. The administration announced that the district's guidelines violate the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment by interfering with parents' right to review their children's education records. Harmeet K. Dhillon, assistant attorney general of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, stated that parental rights are paramount and the department will not tolerate school districts playing fast and loose with federal law in the service of radical gender ideology. The district faces the loss of more than $70 million in federal funding if it fails to comply. Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools officials stated that the district is in full compliance with federal law and expressed disappointment with the lawsuit. Superintendent Anna Stubblefield noted that the district's guidelines are not formal policies and that the majority of parents are already aware of their children's gender identity.
