Kazakhstan prepares for first Kurultai election with extensive international and domestic observation

Kazakhstan will hold its first nationwide vote for the new Kurultai on August 23, 2026, electing 145 members through a proportional representation system. The election marks a significant transition to a new parliamentary model under the new Constitution. To ensure transparency, 777 international observers from 42 countries and 13 international organizations have been accredited to monitor the process. The administration announced that preparations are on schedule, with 10,423 polling stations ready for the vote. The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) will provide the most detailed technical assessment, while domestic civil society groups have also accredited hundreds of observers. This extensive monitoring framework distinguishes Kazakhstan from its regional neighbors, such as Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, which have varying levels of domestic citizen observation. The campaign period concluded on August 21, following a series of televised debates where seven political parties presented their programs on economic growth, social policy, and regional development.
