Israel Opens Tenders for E1 Settlement Expansion Amidst International Condemnation and Concerns Over Palestinian Statehood

Israel has opened tenders for the construction of 1,234 homes in the E1 area, a strategically important tract of land east of Jerusalem. This expansion is part of a larger plan to build 3,400 homes on the 12-square-kilometre parcel, which would create a continuous settlement corridor between occupied East Jerusalem and the Ma’ale Adumim settlement. The move has drawn widespread condemnation from the leaders of seven countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Norway. These nations warned that the E1 project poses an existential threat to a contiguous Palestinian state by effectively dividing the West Bank in two. While the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seeks to establish sovereignty on the ground, critics argue the project undermines the viability of a two-state solution. Despite international pressure, the administration announced the opening of these tenders ahead of the upcoming October elections, aiming to establish new facts on the ground that are difficult to reverse.
