Juan Francisco Gómez Cerchar denies responsibility for potential retaliations following his conviction
Juan Francisco Gómez Cerchar, the former governor of La Guajira, denied responsibility for potential retaliations against the judges and officials involved in his legal proceedings. Magistrate José Joaquín Urbano of the Supreme Court of Justice issued a warning regarding possible risks to those who participated in the sentencing of Gómez Cerchar. This concern stems from several facts, including the discovery of a bullet on the floor of the Procuraduría General de la Nación near the office of Procurador Pedro Luis Bonilla, who participated in the judicial process against Gómez Cerchar. Gómez Cerchar stated from prison that he has no intention of seeking revenge, noting that he is currently serving a 55-year sentence. He also rejected claims that he requested his relatives to resign from public office or move to Italy. He further clarified that his relationship with crime boss Marcos de Jesús Figueroa was strictly related to peace processes and not criminal activities. Gómez Cerchar requested that authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the events at the Procuraduría to determine who is behind the actions.
