Anna Skorokhod Criticizes Failed Peace Mission by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff
Ukrainian parliamentarian Anna Skorokhod stated that the peace mission led by Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff failed to produce a diplomatic breakthrough, instead delivering harsher terms from the Kremlin. While the administration announced the mission as an attempt to jump-start stalled negotiations, Skorokhod noted that Russia remains unwilling to compromise and presented a new set of demands that require Ukraine to surrender significant territory and declare neutrality. Steve Witkoff expressed optimism during the mission, noting that the sides were making progress and establishing communication channels. However, a Ukrainian news outlet reported that the mission was effectively stillborn because the positions of the two nations remain too far apart. The administration's envoys were received personally by President Vladimir Putin, signaling a change in the tack of the administration. Despite the positive reception in Moscow, the Russian negotiating team presented demands that Ukraine largely rejects, such as a permanent ban on foreign military forces and a reduction in the Ukrainian army's size. The mission highlighted the ongoing deadlock between the two nations as they seek a resolution to the war.
