McKenna West Gives Birth to Baby Gabriel in Texas Amidst Surrogacy and Abortion Legal Dispute

McKenna West, an Alaska nurse and surrogate mother, gave birth to a baby named Gabriel in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday. The birth follows a months-long legal battle over whether the child should receive life-saving heart surgery or be terminated in the womb. The infant was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare condition where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. While the biological parents, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed of California, initially requested that West terminate the pregnancy, West refused and moved to Texas to ensure the baby would be born. The administration of the Texas Attorney General's office secured a court order requiring the office to provide the baby with necessary medical treatment and preventing the baby from being moved out of state. A separate order granted Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed the authority to make medical decisions, while temporarily preventing West from making them. The case highlights a conflict between parental rights and bodily autonomy. A hearing is scheduled for August 25 to determine final custody and treatment plans.
