Vanessa Lopez Carrillo Proposes Tax Increases on Beer and High-Sodium Foods for 2027 Economic Package

The Finance Committee of the Chamber of Deputies is considering a proposal to increase the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) for beer and foods with excessive sodium. Vanessa Lopez Carrillo stated that the proposed beer tax increase of 60 cents to one peso per unit, depending on price and presentation, could generate approximately 6.5 billion pesos in additional revenue. She noted that beer accounts for over 94% of the market volume but contributes only 63.3% of the IEPS revenue, while distilled spirits contribute 33.3% of the revenue despite representing only 6.3% of the volume. Carol Antonio Altamirano, president of the Finance Committee, supported the proposal to apply the IEPS to high-sodium products like instant noodles and condiments. He stated that these products could generate up to 12 billion pesos in taxes. Altamirano emphasized that the goal is to address health issues such as hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. The administration announced that these measures are part of the preliminary conclusions for the 2027 Economic Package, aiming to balance fiscal revenue and public health.
