Manizales authorities set deadline for earthquake census and begin demolition of seven high-risk buildings

The administration announced the closure of the registration deadline for the official census of those affected by the August 10 earthquake in Manizales. Residents had until Monday, August 24, to register to access government assistance and recovery programs. The census recorded 3,080 evacuated homes and 8,240 people affected by the seismic event. Following the census, the city is moving into the recovery phase, which includes the demolition of seven buildings with serious structural damage. These include the La Albania, Mirador de La Florida, Plaza Santo Domingo, Las Lomas, Jhonatan, and the building fronting the La Presentacion Clinic. The administration announced that these demolitions are part of a budget-approved project to reduce risks for nearby residents and businesses. Mayor Jorge Eduardo Rojas stated that authorities are conducting building-by-building inspections to guide residents on necessary repairs. While the Coliseo Mayor remains a temporary shelter for families without homes, officials are currently designing housing improvement and substitution strategies to address the long-term needs of the impacted population.
