Zenyazen Escobar found dead in Veracruz vehicle as investigators point to suicide
The General Prosecutor’s Office has stated that investigations into the death of federal deputy Zenyazen Escobar point to suicide. Escobar was found dead with a headshot wound inside a black Mercedes-Benz car parked on the side of a highway in the Puente Nacional municipality of Veracruz. Investigators conducted more than 150 inspections, including forensic medicine, ballistics, genetics, toxicology, and informatics, to reach this preliminary conclusion. The vehicle showed no signs of a violent attack from the outside, and the gun was found positioned between Escobar's legs. The Veracruz government ruled out an external attack on the vehicle, noting that the car was parked in the emergency lane. Escobar served as the secretary of Education from 2018 to 2021 under former governor Cuitláhuac García. He joined the Chamber of Deputies in August 2024. During his tenure, he was involved in a tense session in May where he physically confronted a colleague after being accused of being under the influence of alcohol. The General Prosecutor’s Office clarified that while suicide is the primary finding, other motives and lines of investigation remain open to achieve full clarification.
