Luxury travel bookings and sales surge as wealthy travelers shift vacations to autumn
High-net-worth individuals are increasingly choosing autumn over traditional summer holidays, a trend described as the "fallcation." Luxury travel bookings have risen by 59% compared to last year, while sales have surged by 69% across the global luxury travel network Virtuoso. September is now a primary peak month, with sales increasing by 77%. This shift is driven by a desire to avoid extreme summer heat waves in Europe and the heavy crowds of popular destinations. Wealthy travelers, particularly baby boomers and Gen Xers, are opting for more moderate temperatures and shorter lines. However, this shift is also causing a rise in prices, with hotel rates in Europe for September now approaching summer levels. Data shows that luxury clients are booking further in advance, with 42% of clients booking further ahead to secure preferred options. The highest-value trips, such as those valued at $100,000 and above, have seen the fastest expansion. Popular destinations for wealthy Americans this fall include Paris, the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera, and Tuscany.
