Jim McDonnell leads LAPD in 'Operation Street Sweeper' to crack down on massive Los Angeles street takeover

The Los Angeles Police Department launched 'Operation Street Sweeper' to address illegal street takeovers at the intersection of South Figueroa Street and West Alondra Boulevard. During the operation, more than 150 officers from the LAPD, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and California Highway Patrol moved in on a gathering of over 700 people and numerous vehicles. Law enforcement officials used drone technology and intelligence gathering to anticipate the location of the takeover, allowing officers to surround the area before participants could scatter. The operation resulted in 69 arrests, 570 citations, 200 vehicles impounded, and the recovery of seven firearms. One vehicle caught fire during the crackdown, and several others were towed to nearby impound lots. Jim McDonnell stated that the operation was months in the making and characterized the street takeovers as criminal behavior rather than harmless fun. He noted that the operation was designed to identify and hold organizers and participants accountable. The administration of the city also expressed a respect for the zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal street racing.
