Claudia Sheinbaum proposes constitutional reform to require single Mexican nationality for top executive positions

President Claudia Sheinbaum submitted a constitutional reform initiative to the Senate requiring that individuals aspiring to hold top executive positions, such as the Presidency, state governorships, or the headship of the City of Mexico government, must possess only Mexican nationality. The administration announced that the proposal aims to ensure that leaders can account to the people of Mexico without having to account to another country simultaneously. Luisa Alcalde, the legal advisor to the Presidency, presented the initiative. During a second government report tour in Colima, Claudia Sheinbaum stated that a leader should be exclusively Mexican to serve the nation. She noted that the majority of the Senate approved the initiative during a vote. Larry Rubin, president of the American Society of Mexico, expressed concern regarding the proposal. He argued that having dual nationality does not imply a lack of loyalty and warned that the reform could affect 38 million people of Mexican origin living in the United States. Rubin suggested that the government should consult with constitutional experts and organizations of Mexicans abroad before finalizing the legislation.
