Medical experts are raising concerns over the escalating potency of 7-OH, a concentrated derivative of the kratom plant, which may exceed the potency of morphine. While marketed as a natural herbal supplement, 7-OH is a chemically enriched product that differs significantly from traditional kratom leaf or tea. Research from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and a case study by Chicago doctors highlight that 7-OH can cause significant withdrawal symptoms similar to opioids, such as nausea and anxiety. The drug is becoming a popular substitute for opioid users, though clinical evidence of its effectiveness is still pending. Professor David Kroll of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus notes that while kratom is not a prescription drug, it should be treated as one. He warns that many consumers mistakenly believe the plant is completely safe, which can lead to dangerous overdoses when mixed with other substances. As the DEA prepares to temporarily schedule 7-OH under Schedule I, experts advocate for better federal regulation and labeling to protect consumers from potential toxic side effects.
