Shanik Amira David George highlights risks of new media guidelines and public opposition to regulatory changes

Shanik Amira David George, a coordinator at IBERO Puebla, expressed concern over the proposed General Guidelines for Protecting Audiences rights. The guidelines aim to regulate media information and distinguish between news, opinion, and advertising. However, David George warned that the new rules could grant the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission excessive power to sanction media outlets, potentially leading to self-censorship among journalists. Public feedback on the proposal has been overwhelmingly negative. Data from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission shows that 81% of sampled comments expressed clear opposition to the guidelines. Analysts suggest that while the government does not intend to impose direct censorship, the guidelines may pressure media to self-censor to avoid heavy fines. The administration's proposal has faced criticism for potentially overlooking the needs of community, indigenous, and Afro-Mexican radio stations. IBERO Puebla submitted its analysis to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission as part of the public consultation process.
