Governor Josh Green Prepares for Tropical Storm Moke as Hurricane Lala Recovery Efforts Continue on Hawaiʻi Island
Governor Josh Green is overseeing the recovery from Hurricane Lala, which caused severe damage to the Hawaiʻi Island and claimed two lives. The storm left mud and debris up to 10 feet deep in some areas, destroying numerous homes and businesses. While the state is considering a temporary recovery village, the administration announced that 136 National Guard soldiers and airmen are currently deployed to assist with debris clearance and monitor reservoirs. Tropical Depression Two-C is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Moke this weekend, bringing 10 to 15 inches of rain to southeast sections of Hawaiʻi Island and East Maui. Officials warn that the ground is already saturated from the previous storm. To support the recovery, the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation has deployed over $732,000 in grants. Governor Josh Green also called for a long-term overhaul of the state's energy grid to prevent future widespread outages. Meanwhile, local residents and nonprofits are working to provide immediate food and supplies to the hard-hit rural communities.
