Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharajan Rescued Alive from Flooded Nepal Hydropower Tunnel

Rescuers in Nepal pulled Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharajan alive from an underground tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower project on Friday. The two men were extracted nine days after a glacial collapse and flash flood swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, submerging buildings and infrastructure. Sanjay Shah, a mechanical foreman, and Kabir Maharajan, a mechanical supervisor, were located after search teams heard voices from inside the tunnel. The rescue operation involved using explosives to clear large rocks and digging an emergency trench to drain water. While one of the survivors was reported in critical condition, both were transported to a hospital in Kathmandu. The rescue provides a significant update in a search effort for hundreds of workers missing from various hydropower projects. Authorities estimate that approximately 115 workers remain trapped in the Trishuli 3A tunnel alone, with many more missing across the country. The floods have resulted in a death toll of at least 1,287 people, with thousands more still missing. Relief efforts continue as the government begins to shift focus toward rehabilitation for those affected by the disaster.
