President Abelardo De La Espriella seeks to advance commercial ties and investment with Japan
President Abelardo De La Espriella has initiated a new phase in the commercial relationship between Colombia and Japan. The administration seeks to advance the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which began negotiations in the 2012 and remains unsigned. Minister of Trade Mauricio Gómez Amín traveled to Tokyo to meet with representatives from Toshiba, Toyota, and Mazda. These meetings aimed to explore opportunities in manufacturing, electric mobility, energy, digital infrastructure, innovation, and technology. The administration also seeks to attract Japanese investment into strategic sectors and consolidate a modern agreement for the Colombian agro-industry. President Abelardo De La Espriella stated that the goal is to open markets for products, incorporate technology, and position Colombia as a destination for investment. The government also seeks to reassemble vehicles in Colombia and have Toyota evaluate the country as a destination for electric vehicle projects. During the visit, the Japanese government expressed solidarity with families affected by an earthquake and offered humanitarian aid.
