The Institute for District Cultural Heritage initiates investigation into the demolition of a staircase designed by Rogelio Salmona

The Institute for District Cultural Heritage (IDPC) has launched an investigation into the unauthorized modification of a staircase within an apartment designed by Rogelio Salmona. The building, located in the North of Bogotá, was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in 2010. The intervention was carried out by the design firm Deconama Studio, which replaced the original stairs with a contemporary design featuring cement and glass to expand the main bedroom. Diego Parra, the director of the IDPC, stated that the internal stairs are a fundamental part of the original architectural project and hold heritage value. Because the intervention was performed without prior authorization from the IDPC, the owners may face an economic penalty ranging from 200 to 500 minimum wages per month. If professionals are involved, the fines can double. The owners are also required to restore the original staircase to its previous condition. Actress Diana Ángel expressed her concern on social media, describing the destruction of the heritage work as overwhelming pain. She noted that the stairs were demolished because they were not to the taste of the owners, effectively erasing a piece of history.
