Julio Fierro highlights the importance of seismic resilience as Colombia experiences a series of tremors.
The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported a series of seismic activities across Colombia, primarily concentrated in the Choc贸 and Santander departments. Between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the country experienced multiple tremors, with the most significant activity occurring in Istmina, Choc贸, and Los Santos, Santander. The movements ranged in magnitude from 3.0 to 3.7, with none exceeding a magnitude of 4.0. Julio Fierro, the director of the SGC, emphasized that while earthquakes cannot be predicted with precision, a culture of seismic resilience is essential. He recommended that citizens identify safe zones, establish evacuation routes, and prepare emergency kits containing basic supplies like water, non-perishable food, and first aid materials. Authorities are also coordinating responses in areas like Manizales, where a strong earthquake caused significant damage, providing subsidies for rent and humanitarian aid to affected families.
