Lower Manhattan's population has doubled since 2000, transforming the area from a 9-to-5 business district into a vibrant community. However, a pedestrianization plan for the Financial District remains a pending task for the Department of Transportation. The area continues to serve as a site of commemoration, featuring the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which honors the heroism and stories of those lost in the attacks.
