The United States and Mexico coordinated to destroy over 100 drones used by criminal organizations along the border in August.

The United States destroyed more than 100 drones during the month of August that were presumed to be used by criminal organizations along the border with Mexico. These drones, which are primarily commercial models, are used by cartels and human trafficking groups to monitor police movements and identify open routes where authority is less present. General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo of the Mexican National Defense Secretariat stated that these drones are utilized by groups engaged in illegal migrant trafficking. The Pentagon reported that the actions were part of a joint strategy between the U.S. and Mexican authorities to counter the growing use of drones in the border region. The U.S. military utilized anti-drone systems, including high-energy multi-purpose laser systems, to neutralize the aircraft. General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo noted that Mexico has deployed 10,000 elements of the National Guard and 3,000 elements of the Army along the border. The U.S. military and Mexican authorities continue to work in coordination to manage security and counter illegal activities along the shared border line.
