Mexico Requests United States to Detain Linda Cristina Pereyra Gálvez for Corruption and Money Laundering

The government of Mexico has requested that the United States detain Linda Cristina Pereyra Gálvez, the wife of former Secretary of Public Security Federal Genaro García Luna. The request, issued by the Secretariat of Foreign Relations, was made at the request of the General Prosecutor's Office to facilitate her extradition. Linda Cristina Pereyra Gálvez is suspected of participating in a criminal network of over 50 people involved in organized crime, embezzlement, and money laundering. This network reportedly obtained irregular contracts for the equipment of federal prisons, resulting in an estimated loss of over 5,112 million pesos to the public treasury. The request is currently being studied by US authorities. While the bilateral treaty does not impose a specific timeframe for the apprehension, Linda Cristina Pereyra Gálvez and her children obtained US citizenship in 2019. The Secretariat of Foreign Relations confirmed that there are three formal extradition requests pending against Genaro García Luna, with the most recent request involving the suspected corruption of his wife.
