Mexico Repatriates Former Naval Officer Fernando Faría Laguna Following Fuel Contraband Corruption Scandal

Mexico is repatriating former naval officer Fernando Faría Laguna from Argentina to face trial for his role in a major fuel contraband scandal. The administration announced that the former naval officer, who was considered a central figure in a criminal network, entered Mexico irregularly using a false Guatemalan passport and was eventually captured in Buenos Aires. By dropping the extradition request, the Argentine government allowed for a faster transfer of Fernando Faría Laguna to the Altiplano prison. He is accused of leading a network that defrauded the tax system by allowing millions of liters of fuel from the US to enter Mexico with false declarations. The network, which included his brother, Manuel Roberto, also involved several corrupt public servants who facilitated the distribution of fuel through legally established companies. The Attorney General's Office reported that the scandal resulted in a economic loss of approximately 342 million pesos. Authorities have seized 86 boats and 29 autotankers to combat the organization's influence.
