Maersk signs agreement with Anemoi Marine Technologies to install first-ever wind-powered Rotor Sail on a container vessel
Maersk has signed an agreement with Anemoi Marine Technologies to install a wind-powered Rotor Sail on a container vessel for the first time. The London-based company will design, manufacture, and deliver a 5-meter diameter and 35-meter high fixed Rotor Sail for installation on one of Maersk’s 300-meter long 8,700 TEU container ships. Anemoi Marine Technologies typically installs between three and five Rotor Sails on each vessel, which use wind to generate forward thrust and work alongside the main engine to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The technology has been used in dry bulk carriers and tankers, but the container sector has faced challenges due to limited deck space. The new configuration for the container ship is designed to minimize disruption to cargo handling. Ole Graa Jakobsen, Head of Fleet Technology at Maersk, stated that wind-assisted propulsion is a promising maritime solution with the potential to improve vessel efficiency and reduce emissions. The Rotor Sail is scheduled for installation in mid-2027. Anemoi Marine Technologies currently has 29 Rotor Sails in operation and more than 16 on order.
