Representative Chellie Pingree led a Congressional field hearing in Biddeford, Maine, to address the death of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a Colombian national who was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in July. During the hearing, Pingree revealed that Durán Guerrero was not the intended target of the operation, despite previous claims by the Department of Homeland Security. While the agency stated it was targeting an illegal immigrant with a final order of removal, Durán Guerrero actually held a pending asylum case and a valid work permit. Representative Pingree and other Democratic leaders, including Representative Bennie Thompson and Representative Katherine Clark, questioned the agency's use of deadly force and the lack of body cameras during the operation. The Guerrero family testified, expressing their pain and demanding justice for their son. Governor Janet Mills also testified, and suggested that if ICE cannot be reformed, it should be abolished.
