Major AI Chatbots ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok Experience Simultaneous Service Interruptions on Thursday

On Thursday morning, three of the world's leading AI chatbots—ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok—experienced significant service interruptions at approximately the same time. While the specific cause linking all three providers is unclear, the outages affected thousands of users across various platforms. OpenAI reported that a routing error made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users, resulting in elevated errors and degraded performance. Anthropic confirmed that an infrastructure issue caused a partial outage across its services, including Claude.ai, Claude Code, and the Claude API. xAI attributed the downtime for Grok to an outage at its Memphis compute center. xAI also issued an apology to its compute partners, including Anthropic, who uses xAI's computing power. While Google's Gemini model also experienced reported issues, major cloud providers like Cloudflare and Microsoft Azure reported that their services remained operational during the period. All three primary chatbots have since been restored to full service.
