San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl launches Operation Last Call to restore order in the Gaslamp Quarter.
Police Chief Scott Wahl will lead a high-visibility enforcement operation in the Gaslamp Quarter starting this weekend. The initiative, titled Operation Last Call, aims to address a significant increase in disorderly conduct and violence that has impacted the downtown district. Over the past two years, assaults on officers in the area have risen by 172%. To restore order, the San Diego Police Department will deploy increased foot patrols, dedicated tactical units, and a zero-tolerance posture toward unlawful activity. Mayor Todd Gloria expressed support for the operation, noting that the district should be a safe place for businesses to succeed and for residents to enjoy. Councilmember Marni von Wilpert and Councilmember Stephen Whitburn also praised the quick action to improve public safety. The operation will continue until a notable reduction in violence is observed. Additionally, the City of San Diego is coordinating with stakeholders to improve infrastructure and cleanliness to enhance the overall visitor experience.
