Hurricane Lowell Forecast to Make Sharp Turn Toward Hawaii This Weekend

Hurricane Lowell, a Category 4 storm with 140 mph winds, is currently moving west at 10 mph, approximately 450 miles south of Hilo. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service predict the storm will make a sharp turn toward the north or north-northeast this weekend. While the exact track remains uncertain, the hurricane is expected to remain a major storm through the weekend and could impact the western Hawaiian islands, specifically Kauai and Niihau, by early next week. Currently, the storm is producing life-threatening surf and gusty trade winds across the Hawaiian Islands. A wind advisory is in effect for several islands, and a high surf advisory covers the south and southeast shores. Officials are urging residents to prepare by checking emergency supplies and communication plans. Mayor Rick Blangiardi of Honolulu and Mayor Richard Bissen of Maui County have both encouraged residents to remain vigilant and ready. Meanwhile, Hurricane Karina is moving west-northwest as a Category 4 storm, but it is expected to weaken and pass well northeast of the islands. Hurricane Marie is also tracking west-northwest off the coast of Mexico, posing no direct threat to land.
