John Ratcliffe Visits Moscow to Conduct Intelligence Talks with Russian Officials

CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow last week for an eight-hour visit to meet with Russian intelligence officials. The administration announced that the visit was "semi-routine" and linked it to ongoing efforts to end the war in Ukraine. During the trip, Ratcliffe reportedly addressed several key issues, including the possibility of a Russian attack on NATO members, Russia's relationship with Iran, and the fact that Russia was losing its war with Ukraine. While the administration has sought to play down tensions with Moscow, Russia has recently warned that the United Kingdom could face consequences for providing long-range missile technology to Ukraine. Additionally, the administration has maintained a stance of supporting sanctions against Moscow while the conflict continues. The visit also served to signal U.S. support for frontline European states. Ratcliffe stopped in Latvia on his way to Moscow to meet with Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs. This move was intended to show support for the Baltic states, which fear that President Vladimir Putin could soon test NATO's cohesion and its Article 5 pledge.
