A driveway at the oceanfront mansion of Nicolas Cage collapsed into a sinkhole in Malibu.

A driveway at the oceanfront mansion of Nicolas Cage collapsed into a sinkhole on Tuesday morning. The collapse occurred at the vacant seaside residence in the 31000 block of Sea Level Drive, where coastal erosion caused the ground to wash away. The sinkhole, which is approximately 30 feet by 30 feet wide, formed after steady rainfall and high surf from Tropical Storm Marie caused erosion underneath the home. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene early Tuesday morning following a report of a broken gas line. Utility crews from the Southern California Gas Company were on-site to repair the damaged gas main. Building and safety officials assessed the property, while workers used sandbags to protect neighboring properties from further erosion. No injuries were reported during the collapse. The mansion, which was purchased by Nicolas Cage in 2024 for $10.5 million, is currently under renovation. The City of Malibu is monitoring coastal erosion across the region due to forecast El Niño conditions.
