Kathy Hochul calls on the administration to release $87 million in promised federal counterterrorism funding for New York

Kathy Hochul stated that the administration reduced New York's homeland security funding by 86% last year, a reduction of $187 million. While the administration promised to restore the full amount, New York is still waiting for the $87 million remaining after $100 million was already paid out. The funding supports intelligence operations, transit security, equipment, and training for police and sheriff's departments. Mayor Zohran Mamdani noted that the unpaid funds are necessary for 12 bomb squads, communication equipment for fire and rescue workers, and planning for potential nuclear attacks. A spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency stated that New York has failed to spend $300 million in other Homeland Security funding and has received a larger share of counterterror funding than its risk profile suggests.
