San Francisco Firefighters Rescue Man Trapped Inside Garbage Truck

San Francisco firefighters rescued a man from inside a garbage truck early Wednesday morning in the Tenderloin neighborhood. The incident occurred at the 100 block of Mason Street near the Powell Street BART station. Fire crews were dispatched at approximately 4:11 a.m. after a bystander flagged down the driver of a Recology garbage truck and reported hearing someone yelling from inside the truck's hopper. More than 20 firefighters spent roughly two hours removing piles of garbage to extricate the man, who was believed to have been dumpster diving for food when the truck picked up the dumpster and dropped him into the compactor. The man was conscious and speaking with firefighters when he was pulled out and was subsequently taken to a hospital. One firefighter also suffered a hand laceration during the rescue operation and required stitches.
