The Hospital General of Mexico Dr. Eduardo Liceaga identifies Salmonella outbreak affecting 135 resident and high-specialty doctors
The Hospital General of Mexico Dr. Eduardo Liceaga identified an outbreak of infectious acute gastroenteritis caused by Salmonella spp. affecting 135 resident and high-specialty doctors. The outbreak was identified on August 31, following a sudden increase in patients presenting symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, light fever, and vomiting. Laboratory studies confirmed the presence of Salmonella spp. in the majority of cases, with two cases also showing Escherichia coli enterotoxigénica (ETEC). As of September 3, 41 of the affected doctors remained hospitalized and stable under medical surveillance, while 15 of these patients are in intensive care due to apparently delayed treatment. The hospital suspended the subrogated meal service for residents immediately following the detection of the outbreak. The Secretariat of Health initiated an exhaustive epidemiological and sanitary investigation to determine the specific source of contamination and establish prevention measures. This investigation follows previous reports from the doctors regarding deficiencies in food hygiene, storage, and quality, including dirty utensils and long waiting times. The Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM has also intervened to address the case.
