Rafael Belaunde reports three people injured and significant building damage following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake in Peru.

Peru's defense minister Rafael Belaunde confirmed that at least three people were injured and several buildings were damaged following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Ayacucho region on Thursday. The seismic event, which occurred at a depth of approximately 62 to 66 miles, was felt across large parts of the country, including the capital city of Lima. According to the defense minister, 22 homes and six schools were damaged, while 10 healthcare facilities in the Ayacucho region and two in the neighboring Cusco region were impacted. Approximately 9,000 properties lost power during the tremors. The earthquake occurred in a relatively remote part of the Andes mountain range. While the tremors were felt widely, the Peruvian Navy confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami. Seismologists note that while Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela have experienced significant seismic activity recently, the earthquakes in South America are driven by the same tectonic forces but are not directly connected to the activity in Southern California.
